Things to Enjoy in Tulum
When you hear the word "Tulum", what normally pops into you mind? I bet it's the Mayan Ruins. Of course Tulum is famous for its ruins, one of the most visited Mayan ruins.
History unfolds as soon as you step onto the ruins. The location on a cliff overlooking the sea and against the turquoise waters of the Caribbean is spectacular. There are three walls that served as a protection of the city from outsiders, the remains of several house-type structures, burial sites for the kings, a tall pyramid and two structures on each corner of the fence to guide the planting of crops. Tour guides are available to take you through the ruins and explain each building.
Aside from the ruins, there are so many other things to do and see in the area which should not be missed. Several water-based activities and adventures are available and to be enjoyed. Descending the rear of the ruins, you can climb down to the beach. For snorkelers and divers, the ocean of Tulum provides access to the second largest reef in the world, Great Mayan Reef. You'll definitely adore this coral barrier with many varieties of fish, algae and coral. Hiring a boat or finding a guided snorkel is recommended. The ocean is littered with coral; the jungle contains over 700 kilometers of underwater caverns that are full of crystal clear fresh water, all require a guide for the safest, unique and unforgettable experience.
One can also take a guided adventure tour through Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. It is the Mexico's largest protected coastal wetland and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. It is a natural park that covers approximately 1 million acres of coastal jungle, and is home to a huge diversity of species of birds, fish, plants and animals; includes part of the extensive barrier reef system and 23 Archaeological sites.
If you're a runner, a great opportunity to do the activity, is during early morning or during evenings. During the day the sun is really. So don't forget your sunscreen and your bottled water.
Another sport you might want to try is kiteboarding. This is an extreme sport in which participants ride on skateboards or snowboards with a kite attached to their bodies to give propulsion and lift. This is perfect for the thrill seekers. Tulum is a great spot to learn the sport. A perfect place to learn as the wind is always there for you to practice. It has long stretches of white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters.
All these activities and more are available in Tulum. If you consider staying in for a vacation, you can avail the fairly simple and rustic Tulum hotel cabanas. The experience will be relaxing and healing to the mind and body.
